What is the difference between sand blasting and plastic media blasting? Do you offer both?
Plastic media blasting is less abrasive, works well on painted surfaces with no rust or minor surface rust. It is particularly effective on certain fiberglass and aluminum surfaces. Sandblasting is a bit more aggressive. It works well on sheet metal and steel surfaces and is very effective on rusted surfaces. We perform both.
What is the difference between blasting and chemical stripping? Is blasting really better?
Blasting is accomplished through the application of compressed air propelling the media or sand onto the surface at the required amount of pressure to remove paint, coating and rust from the surface. Chemical stripping is the application of liquid chemical onto the surface by hand (brush or rag) and the removal of the residue on the surface after the chemical has penetrated the paint. Scraping and reapplication is often required to entirely clean the surface.
Can't I save a lot of money and get the same results with an inexpensive home blasting kit?
Home blasting kits are limited in scope. It will not duplicate the process we have because of the capacity of our compressor and the size of our blast nozzle. In addition, we blast in a self-contained booth with a dust collector and recycle our sand/media. This keeps the mess, clean up and waste to a minimum.
Will my blasted parts rust?
Most blasted surfaces will remain rust free from 5 to 10 days if kept inside, free from moisture, humidity and handling. Badly rusted surfaces, after blasting, tend to form surface rust in a shorter period of time. We recommend avoiding handling as much as possible and priming as soon as possible.
How long does it take to get my parts blasted?
It depends on our workload and scheduled appointments. Normally 2-3 day turnaround is typical depending on the scope of the job and cooperation of the weather for pickup.
Can you blast something that is powder coated?
Powder coating is very difficult to remove. If we can remove it, the material and time required often makes it cost prohibitive. It could run 3 to 4 times the normal cost of removing paint from the same item.
Do I have to do any special prep. before I paint or powder coat parts you have blasted?
It is recommended that you clean with a prep solution to remove any residue that remains from handling.
Are there certain items that are too fragile to be blasted?
Yes, for example, thin gauge aluminum, such as race car panels are too fragile for blasting.
What is the biggest item you can blast?
Our blast booth is 22 ft deep by 12 ft wide and 8 ft high. We do small parts, complete vehicles, and industrial equipment. If it fits, we will blast it.
Can you blast paint from wood or plastic parts?
We do not blast wooden items. We are able to blast most plastic items.
Do you offer priming?
Yes, priming is available from a body shop located in the same facility at Quick Strip.
Does my car have to be drivable?
We will blast cars that are drivable but that limits the blasting to the exterior surfaces of the car. For the most part, the cars we blast are disassembled - with the bodies on carts, dollies, or rotisseries. We will blast the doors, fenders, hood, deck lid, as well as the frame and parts separately and completely.(If the car is drivable we will seal off the interior to keep it clean.)
Do I need to remove the interior to get my car blasted?
No, but we will not blast anything inside the car- jambs, floors - if the interior is intact.
Do you blast the door jambs?
Only if the interior of the car has been removed.
Can I bring my car in whole or do I have to disassemble it first?
We will blast it to your specifications - keep in mind the limitations mentioned if the car is drivable with the interior intact.
Can you blast off undercoating?
Undercoating is difficult to remove. We ask the customer to remove the undercoating by burning and scraping prior to bringing it to us for blasting.
Can you come to me and blast on site?
All our blasting is done at our facility.
Can you just do one part of my car (like a fender) while it's still mounted on the vehicle?
Yes, we perform spot blasting. For example, we can blast a section, i.e., a fender or the hood.
Is there any minimum?
No, cost to a customer is based on time and material.
